To kick off the breeding season, male Tūī perch in circles to out-sing each other in ‘song battles’ – and with two voice boxes each we’re talking the NZSO of birdsong, here – while females sit on the outside waiting to be impressed. They also perform ‘the trill’, a special high-frequency sexy song which the females apparently find a complete turn-on.

Metal bird tui twosome

I thought it was just the right thing for a wedding present to an Australian couple, the groom had spent his formative years in Aotearoa NZ. However, I’m not aware of how they think of it as I was not there when they opened their gifts (giving gifts was not necessarily expected, they were happy we made the effort to get there)
