Ahhh kids. We love them (most of the time). Sometimes between all the school drop offs, the tantrums and the constant feeding, it's easy to forget how precious our children are. That's why the first Children’s Commissioner, Ian Hassall founded Children's Day in 1991. Children's Day or Te rā o ngā tamariki, is celebrated on the first Sunday of March each year and it's about taking time to bring whanau together for a showing of love and appreciation for our tamariki.
Sometimes, in all the chaos of adulthood, we forget how truly magical childhood is and how important it is to nurture and appreciate this special time in life. That's why on Children's Day, there are lots of activities for you, the kids and the whole whanau to get involved in. You can celebrate with your community, your schools or even just at home. Why not get the kids off the technology this Children's Day and do something together.
Awesome ways to celebrate Children's Day:
- Head down to the local park or playground and spend some quality time together in the sunshine! There are several localised events in the spirit of Children's Day, see what's going on near you!
- Play a game together as a family, there is nothing quite like a good game of Monopoly to bring everyone together. We have a great range of games available from retro to strategy and more.
- Cook a family meal together with the kids. We love the tried and tested family recipes from Kidspot here.
- Head outside for a classic game of backyard cricket.
